Children's Reading Program

Every Third Thursday at 4:00 P.M. starting in September 2007 the Adelson Library will host the "Kid's Corner" a children's reading program. Often hands on activities follow the reading. Open to persons of all ages, this program and the books are intended for school age children.

Red Knot: A Shorebird’s Incredible Journey by Nancy Carol Willis

Day/time: Thursday, September 20, 2007, 4:00 pm

Description: Come join us as we explore the wonders of bird migration. This book reading will be accompanied by an interactive multimedia presentation and discussion.

 

Animals in Flight by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page

Day/time: Thursday, October 18, 2007, 4:00 pm

Description: Find out how, when, and why birds and beasts fly.

 

Washing the Willow Tree Loon by Jacqueline Briggs Martin

Day/time: Thursday, November 15, 2007, 4:00 pm

Description: Follow the rescue, cleaning, and release of one particular bird after an oil spill in Turtle Bay.

 

Beaks! by Sneed B. Collard III

Day/time: Thursday, December 20, 2007, 4:00 pm

Description: A beautifully illustrated book introducing the amazing variety of bird bills and how they relate to what birds eat. After reading the book we’ll watch some bird bills in action at the Lab’s bird feeding garden.

Description: What is the one thing that makes a bird a bird? Come join us to find out! We’ll have some special displays to help us explore the question more after the book reading.

 

Birds Build Nests by Yvonne Winer, illustrated by Tony Oliver

Description: An introduction to the materials birds use and the places where they build their nests, presented in a beautiful blend of science, illustration, and poetry. Birds Build Nests explores nests found all over the world.

 

When Agnes Caws! by Candace Fleming.

Description: Follow the adventures of Agnes and her mother, Professor Octavia Peregrine, as they race to find the Pink-headed Duck—before Colonel Pittsnap does!

 

Flute’s Journey: The life of a Wood Thrush by Lynne Cherry

Day/time: Thursday, May 15, 2008, 4:00 pm

Description: We will follow the journey of Flute, a Wood Thrush, as he migrates from the summer home where he was born in the Belt Woods of Maryland, to his winter home in Costa Rica--and back again.

In 2006 Lynne Cherry was Artist-in-Residence at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Her work shows a dedication to educating others of the need to conserve the earth's natural resources and the impact of human actions upon the environment around us.
