Adelson Library offers a variety of instructional opportunities for Cornell University students, staff and instructors. Many library sponsored workshops are available to the members of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

The Adelson Library will once again host a series of interactive workshops at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. 

These workshops are free but are by reservation only.

Alumni Weekend Workshops
The Birders Resource Workshop is a regular part of Alumni weekend

Birders Resource Workshop

Following the lab's early-morning bird walk, librarian Jacalyn Spoon at the Lab of Ornithology provided a hands-on session to teach alumni to use the many online resources available to birders. This workshop is usually presented in a round-robin format.

In one hour attendees discovered Library and Lab of Ornithology Resources with Jacalyn Spoon the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Librarian. This workshop will provide an overview of available lab and library services and resources. A hands-on interactive session will be included to allow students to try various resources and have the opportunity to ask more detailed questions. Internet novices welcome! Following the workshop will be a brief tour of the lab and library.

Office 2007 Getting Started

Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows is a major redesign of the popular Office Suite. This 2-hour introductory workshop is for users of Office 2003 who are interested in or just getting started with Office 2007. You will learn how to work with the new Office Ribbon interface, understand Office 2007 file compatibility issues, and be introduced to some of the notable new features of the main applications in the latest version of Office.
A working knowledge of the Office 2003 Suite for Windows. Some familiarity with Word, Excel, or PowerPoint is an advantage.

Danger: Internet Ahead!

Danger, Internet Ahead!" is a presentation for end-users about staying secure online. It distills the most critical elements of up-to-date user awareness and presents them through anecdotes, examples, and illustrations of security concepts. The goal is to take a less dry approach to this often dull subject, and to provide useful, understandable information for audiences to take back and use in their own areas.This popular class will cover Internet security and e-mail spam.

 

 Introduction to the Gallery of Bird and Wildlife Art

This quick hands-on workshop will explore the Gallery and all of the tools associated with the Luna Insight software. After the workshop a half hour will be dedicated to anyone wishing to explore the gallery with the help of the librarian.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology Gallery of Bird and Wildlife Art, contains scans and digital photographs of 786 art objects in the collection of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The collection has been largely shaped by artists who hoped to educate the public about birds and other wildlife through illustration, bringing beauty and elegant design into their work while seeking to learn about birds and, ultimately, to protect them.

In this hands-on workshop you will learn the basic functions of Adobe InDesign, how to use it's tools and options, and practice by making a simple poster document.

Basic familiarity with publishing software, photo editing, layout and/or other Adobe products a plus.

Drop in and ask a question or set up personal time with the librarian to improve your research skills. We can explore the new library features or concentrate on a specific electronic database. You can learn to get the resources you need via interlibrary loan, BorrowDirect, and MyDocument Delivery, on or off campus.


Participants can learn how to use Cornell Lab of Ornithology tools including the Macaulay Library Catalog (animal behavior.org), All About Birds (allaboutbirds.org) and Birds of North America Online, and the CUMV catalog.


Having trouble with your E-Mail, E-Calendar, RefWorks, Confluence Wiki or other E-Resources? Drop in and ask your librarian.

Intended for staff at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Navigating the Confluence Wiki will provide basic hands-on instruction in using the Confluence wiki. In this session you will create your own wiki space, set your security preferences, learn to post a document, and find the help pages.

Included will be a demonstation of how Adelson Library staff use the wiki and a brief over view of Lab of O projects currently using the wiki. 

Learn the basics and get started.

Photoshop Getting Started

Photoshop Getting Started In this hands-on workshop you will learn how to: Organize your Photoshop workspace, create and save Photoshop documents, work with layers, add images and text to your documents, create custom paint brushes, and paint and crop an image to prepare it for printing.

Photoshop: Crafting Selections

Crafting precise selections in Photoshop is necessary to develop high quality color correction and special effects. In this hands-on workshop you will learn how to make selections using the select menu.  You will learn to use the selection tools (marquee, lasso, magic wand), channels, paths, and the extract filter.

Microsoft Access is used to store and retrieve information that can be used to automate common workplace tasks. Create a sample database objects, sort and filter data, and generate reports. This hands-on class will prepare you to learn more specialized features of Access on your own.

Learn how to make simple web pages using HTML and basic cascading stylesheet. After the workshop you should be able to work more comfortably in a content management system by understanding what the WYSIWYG editor is doing in the background so that you can edit the HTML to compensate for the WYSIWYG editor's shortcomings.

The Power of PowerPoint Templates

Instructor: Susan Spear, Lab of O Graphic Artist

Find yourself fighting with PowerPoint to make it do what you want it to? Is each slide a new adventure? Learn how to use PowerPoint templates and tools to be more effective, and to create a more consistent, easily modified presentations. Get the most out of Slide Design, Layout, and Color Scheme. Practice creating new slides or modifying slide design and layout, using pre-designed CLO templates. Take away the template files for your own use.
If there is time, we will discuss making your slide presentation file as small as possible, by correctly formatting images before placing them in the document.


Life Sciences Databases: What's New in Web of Knowledge

Using RefWorks: a citation management database

This class will provide an introduction to RefWorks, a software program freely available to the Cornell community. A web-based, EndNote-like product, RefWorks allows users to easily import and organize references from online database searches and format their papers and bibliographies.

Introduction to Manifold GIS

Introduction to Manifold GIS will cover the basic concepts of GIS mapping and analysis using Manifold, a modern, low-cost, high-performance GIS application.  Learn how to import different types of data, perform basic spatial analysis, and create maps.  This workshop is intended for GIS novices, and also for experienced ArcGIS users who want to learn the basics of the Manifold interface.
