Swallows

1. This swallow winters farther north than any other American swallow, and it returns to its nesting grounds long before other swallows come back. Its ability to use plant foods helps it survive periods of bad weather.

2. An unmated male of this swallow species may kill the nestlings of a nesting pair. His actions often succeed in breaking up the pair and afford him the opportunity to mate with the female.

3. A pair of swallows of this species was once observed assisting a pair of Western Bluebirds in raising young. The swallows guarded the nest and tended the bluebird nestlings, and after the bluebirds fledged, the swallows used the nest site for their own young.

4. Members of this swallow species which nest in the twilight zone of caves often have their nests in places with minimal light. Individual birds appear to be able to locate these nests by flying past the nest site and then turning toward the nest, which is in better light than the bird’s darker vantage point.
