1. The male of this species typically has two mates at a time, and on rare occasion, three. This species is not a lark (family Alaudidae) but rather a member of the family Icteridae, along with blackbirds and orioles.
2. In preparation for fall migration, this species assembles into larger and larger flocks that gradually coalesce into flocks of thousands. Winter roosts can number into the millions of birds.
3. This species begins southward migration unusually early, beginning in mid-July. It spends up to eight months of the year in its winter home in South America, during the austral summer. Its name does not seem to fit its summer grassland home.
4. A furtive bird of open grasslands, this species takes its name not only from its diet, but also from its insect-like song.
