1.
The "Ipswich Sparrow" a subspecies that breeds on Sable Island, Nova
Scotia, is nearly 50 percent heavier than most other subspecies of this
sparrow. It is the palest race, and is found in winter in sand dunes
along the Atlantic Coast. It was formerly considered a separate species.
2.
Instead of having simple molts like most birds and changing its body
feathers once or twice a year, this species may change the feathers of
its face and throat up to six times in one year. The rest of the body
feathers are only replaced once or twice in the same period.
3.
This sparrow is the only member of its taxonomic genus. Based on
analysis of morphology, plumage, and other factors, its closest
relative is thought to be the Lark Sparrow. This species responds
quickly to changes in habitat; it is often the first species to occupy
reclaimed mine sites and abandon old farm fields as they return to
forest.
4. The range of this sparrow is nearly continuous from the Aleutians to the eastern United States. However, the species is also found on the plateau of central Mexico, about 1500 km (930 mi) from the next closest population. The sparrows of this species that are found on the Aleutian Islands of Alaska are very dark and very large: one-third longer than the eastern birds, and weighing twice as much.
