1. Surprisingly, this species can feed at night. It uses touch to catch fish in darkness or low light conditions.

2. The floating nest of this species gradually sinks as the material below the water surface decays, and it requires continual maintenance. Both parents add new nest material daily until one or two weeks before departing the colony. Older chicks also add nest material from the immediate vicinity of the nest.

3. The young of this species appear to have a difficult time learning to catch fish efficiently. They stay with their parents for long periods of time, and are fed by them even on the wintering grounds. Many do not return to the nesting grounds for several years, remaining instead on the wintering areas.

4. Only a small percentage of the population of this species nests in the state for which it is named. This is the "seagull" that came to the aid of Mormon settlers in Utah, helping rid their crops of a plague of grasshoppers.
