List of Top 20 Common Birds in Decline

Using data from the annual Christmas Bird Counts, combined with Breeding Bird Survey reports, Audubon researchers have reported on how populations of all common North American species routinely encountered in these surveys have fared during the past 40 years.  The results point to major problems in both local habitats and national environmental trends.

Populations of some species fell as much as 80 percent. All 20 birds on the national Common Birds in Decline list lost at least half their populations in just four decades.

Common species with the largest population reductions in the past 40 years include:

Northern Bobwhite: Down 82%

Evening Grosbeak: Down 78%

Northern Pintail: Down 77%
