Great Backyard Bird Count

February 15-18, 2008

One of the year's most fun, interesting and important birding events is the annual Great Backyard Bird Count.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds.

James Hendrickson of New Jersey submitted this male Hooded Merganser which was selected as the winner of the best overall photograph from last year's event.

Despite the name, participants can count birds anywhere for as little or as long as they wish during the four-day period. Over 80,000 checklists were submitted in last year's event.

Visit the Great Backyard Bird Count web site for the details and to enjoy some great images sent in by participants.
