Whooping Cranes head north
Members of the Texas flock of Whooping Cranes have officially started their northward migration.
On March 25th, Tom Stehn, Whooping Crane Coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, reported that five Whooping Cranes had left the Texas coast and had started their northward migration.
The cranes will typically migrate north in small groups. Peak departures usually occur between April 4 and April 12.
A record number of Whooping Cranes wintered on the Texas coast this year, with 230 adults and 38 juveniles.
