Breeding and nonbreeding plumages
Many bird species exhibit bright, vibrant colors during the breeding season, followed by a molt to more subdued colors. In most cases it is the male of the species that exhibits the strong seasonal color transitions.
There are ten birds in this identification game. The images on the left illustrate the bird in its nonbreeding plumage. Click on the left-hand image to see the bird in its breeding plumage on the right. The name of the bird is shown on the image on the right.
