Population Trend Estimates
By Species: What are the population trends for this species?
Let's look at the Project FeederWatch trend graphs for Carolina Wren.
For this example, we will look at four regions: the New England,
Allegheny, mid-Atlantic and South Central regions (click here for a map
to see where these regions are).
Although the number of birds seen at one time (blue diamonds) has held
steady over the 16 years of FeederWatch counts, the percentage of
feeders visited (red squares) declined in 3 of these 4 regions during
the mid-1990s, coincident with a series of cold winters.
This decline was not apparent further south in the South Central region with milder winters.
Since the mid-1990s, the percentage of feeders visited by Carolina Wrens has been steadily increasing in all four regions.
