Types of Data

Core data: species, number, location, date

Additional data: breeding, habitat, behavior, disease, color morphs (pigeons).

Each citizen-science project collects certain core data: species seen, number of individuals, where they were and when they were seen. Additional data collected by some projects include breeding information (such as clutch size or nesting success), habitat characteristics (such as habitat type, vegetation structure), behavior (such as courtship), presence of disease, and color morphs.

Most bird population data available from our citizen-science projects fall into the categories below.

Bird Abundance
How many birds?
The number of birds of a certain species that have been reported, across its range or for a given locality. May be presented as relative abundance maps, table, or graphs.

Bird Distribution
Where are the birds found?
Usually represented by a range map or simple points on a map.

Movements of Bird Populations
Distribution and Abundance Data Over Time
Using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and abundance and distribution data from various Lab of Ornithology projects, bird population movements are mapped and presented here. Discusses migration, irruptions (such as those of Common Redpolls), range expansions, and more, with lots of animated maps.

Species List

Which birds are found here?
Can be found as summary reports within various project web sites, or in the "most probable" species checklist provided when you are entering data for a given project.

Breeding Data: First Egg Dates
When does this bird breed?

Breeding Data: Clutch Size
How many eggs does this bird lay?

Breeding Data: Number of Fledglings
How many young do individuals of this species produce each year?

Population Trend Estimates by Species
What are the population trends for this species?

Population Trends by Location
What are the population trends in this region for various species?

Spread of Disease
Track the spread of disease in wild bird populations
