The mission of the Lab of Ornithology is to conserve biological diversity. The sounds and videos in Macaulay Library's archive provide a key resource for conservation projects. Scientists use sound and video to compare species' behavior, physiology, and variation in vocalizations. Audio guides can help train surveyors in ecological areas where birds are rarely seen but constantly heard. Other researchers might use sounds to draw in a desired species or simulate a predator species. Macaulay Library actively supports these endeavors and works with a wide variety of conservation organizations.

Case Studies

Birds in Forested Landscapes

birds_in_forested_landscapes

This program links birders with Lab of Ornithology staff to study the habitat needs of North American forest birds. Participants receive a CD of songs, calls, and other sounds to help with identification and for use in the field.

Golden-winged Warbler Atlas Project

The Golden-winged Warbler is a migratory species of high conservation concern. Birders survey populations at known breeding sites by playing a CD with the warber's call to get the birds to respond and help alert the surveyor to their presence.

Florida Scrub-Jay Surveys and Habitat Requirements

The North Florida Field Office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service mentions us as a source for high-quality recordings of Florida Scrub-Jay territorial scolding for use in surveying a site. We often sell these types of recordings to environmental consultants who use them in bird survey work for their clients.
