Figure 4. Last winter, species that feed on the ground, including the Dark-eyed Junco (left) and American Tree Sparrow (right), were notably scarce at feeders in comparison with the winter of 1998­99. Did the mild winter allow them to find an abundant supply of natural foods away from FeederWatchers' backyards? The gray areas in the map above indicate where the species showed a negative change in abundance during the past two winters (see Table 3).
