AUTUMN 2006/VOLUME 20, NUMBER 4
Sounds of the Amazonian Rainforest
A new six-CD audio guide from the Lab?s Macaulay Library will assist conservationists in studying and monitoring
western Amazonian birds. The guide will also help birders in deciphering
the myriad voices of the Amazonian rainforest, home to the greatest diversity of birdlife on the planet.
Bird Voices of Alta Floresta and Southeastern Amazonian Brazil features voices of 446 bird species, from Amazonian
Antshrike to Zigzag Heron. The birds are native to the lowland forests of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, particularly the Alta Floresta region, an area bounded by the Amazon River and four of its tributaries. These rivers are
effective barriers for many birds, often resulting in the evolution of different species on opposite sides of a river, one of the reasons for the region?s vast biodiversity.
The audio guide was made possible in part by funding from The Field Museum of Chicago and the Moore Foundation. |
