Tree Swallow by Louis Agassiz Fuertes
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s collection includes work by artists who strove to depict birds accurately through scientific observation and illustration, while also conveying the beauty and wonder of birds. “I’ve never been able to disassociate painting from bird study,” said artist George Miksch Sutton. “It’s all the same thing.” With more than 1,000 works of art, the collection includes extensive pieces by Louis Agassiz Fuertes, known as one of the finest bird portraitists in history. The collection also features work by John James Audubon, John Gould, and Alexander Wilson, as well as of recent artists, including Charley Harper, Robert Mengel, and Tony Angell. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is grateful to the many artists and friends who have contributed to this collection throughout the years.
