Summer Nocturnal Flight Call Recordings
I have been recording the nocturnal flight calls of birds from late March thru October. While I typically get most recordings of flight calls during the "traditional" migration periods for upstate NY, I also get many flight calls during other times. For example, in June and early July I most frequently record the flight calls of Black-billed Cuckoo and Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Beginning in mid-July I begin to record many species of birds that are known breeders in the general area of the flight call detector. Finally, in late July and through August I begin to record migrants. These include Yellow Warblers in July, and then many Veeries in August. I also make many recordings of birds that are local breeders and are thought not to be migrating during these months. Speculation is that this is evidence of post breeding dispersal where the birds are moving at night from their breeding territories to better feeding territories. Below is a summary table of the recordings that I have made for July (first) and August (second) 2006.
The table shows the number of nocturnal flight call recorded/call type.
The identification to species of these recordings must be qualified. I did not see the
birds. I am identifying them to the best of my ability through listening to the sounds
and viewing the spectrograms of the sounds.
