    I post the focus card birds on one side of the cafeteria, and have my kids look at the cards with binoculars.  They practice using the binoculars (especially finding focus).  We read the articles on binoculars in the Reference Guide before we do this.  As they practice, I ask them to name the key characteristics that visible on the focus birds.
