Education Featured in BirdScope Magazine
BirdScope features BirdSleuth and student research in the latest issue
The latest (summer 2006) issue of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology members' magazine, BirdScope, features BirdSleuth and student research in two stories.
“Young Bird Detectives Hit the Trail” introduces BirdScope readers to the new BirdSleuth curriculum featuring "real science for real kids". It describes the inquiry-based approach we’ve found to be successful—and fun—for teachers and students across the nation. Through their inquiries, students ask and answer their own questions about birds. Students can even publish their findings in the Lab's student research journal or online webzine.
The second article, “Taking Terns,” features a research report published in that student research journal, Classroom BirdScope. The report was written by three 8th grade students in Rye, NH. Their teacher, Ms. Ellwood, was an active participant in the BirdSleuth field test this past year, and successfully guided her students through the process of conducting scientific research projects. In “Taking Terns,” these three young scientists report the results of their research on the eating habits of gulls.
