Raven Lite 2.0 README

The Bioacoustics Research Program of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is pleased to provide Raven Lite 2.0, its sound analysis software, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux users.

1. What is Raven Lite?

Raven Lite is an interactive sound analysis tool for researchers in the field of animal bioacoustics. However, we hope that linguists, psychologists, and musicians will also find it useful.

Features

2. System Requirements

Raven Lite requires a Java runtime environment version 8 update 40 or newer.

Windows

Raven Lite for Windows requires a PC with Windows 7 or newer.

Mac OS

Raven Lite for Mac OS X requires Mac OS X version 10.8.3 or newer.

Linux

Raven Lite for Linux requires:

3. Installation Instructions

Raven Lite is installed to a single folder, usually "/Applications/Raven Lite 2.0" on Mac OS X and "C:\users\[your username]\Raven Lite 2.0" on Windows. Installing Raven Lite 2.0 will not overwrite any existing Raven Pro or Raven Lite 1.0 installation if you accept the defaults. You can use the new version of Raven Lite alongside prior versions to compare features. Before removing an existing installation, be sure to save copies of any work you may have saved to the installation folder that you want to keep. This may include sound files and selection data.

3.1 Registering a license

Raven Lite is free to use, but requires a valid license. You will be given a license serial number to be used on the Raven Lite registration dialog. The serial number will be sent to you via email. The registration dialog will be presented to you when you launch Raven Lite. You can copy the serial number to the system clipboard, paste it into the dialog using the Paste button, enter your email into the dialog, and then press the Register button to register. You can also choose to run Raven Lite in demo mode by pressing the "Run Demo" button on the dialog, after which you should select the "Register..." menu item on the Help menu to register a license. You will be asked to enter the license serial number and your email address as described above. Once you are registered, Raven Lite will attempt to download any files it needs to transform the demo version into the product version.

3.2 Launching Raven Lite

To launch Raven Lite for Mac OS X, double-click on the RavenLite.app application in Finder.

To launch Raven Lite for Windows, double-click on the Raven Lite shortcut in the Raven Lite folder, or choose the Raven Lite item in the Start Menu program group.

4.1 Help resources

4.2 Performance tips

It is important to run Raven Lite with sufficient memory. By default, Raven runs with a maximum memory allocation size of 50% of the total installed RAM in your computer. If you are working with large sounds, you may wish to allow Raven to use more. If you have a lot of other programs running that use a lot of RAM, you may want to reduce the amount of memory that Raven is allowed to use. To do this, open the Memory Manager window by selecting Memory Manger from the Window menu, then click on the Configure button. You can set the amount of memory that Raven is allowed to use to low, medium (default) or high.

4.3 Reporting a problem

If you notice any problems while running Raven Lite, there are a couple of ways to gather information to report to the Raven team.

The first is to see if any information has been written to the console. On Windows, that means running with the Raven Lite Console. There is a shortcut provided to the Raven Lite Console when Raven Lite is installed. There is also a file called RavenConsole.bat in the Raven Lite folder. Double-clicking on this file will launch Raven Lite with a Java console to allow additional program output to be written to this console. If you report a problem, please include any information that you see in the console.

The second way to provide information to the Raven team is by using the Email Feedback tool, which you can find in the Help menu of Raven Lite. By using this tool, you are providing us with much more helpful information than by just sending an email using your email program. This is because Raven Lite is able to gather a lot of information about the program environment and include it in the email that it generates.
