Like their Northern cousins, Southern Right Whales produce moans or "flatulent" calls, under 400 Hz. In addition, however, they make upswept vocalizations, calls that rise in frequency.

The illustrations below are sound spectrograms of moans made by a female Southern Right whale, named "Archipelago", recorded by BRP director, Chris Clark, in Argentina in 1977.

To hear the sounds, click on the spectrograms.
