Arbor Day 2008

More than 900 children, accompanied by teachers and parents, visited the Santa Clara City Library’s “Celebrate Urban Birds” booth at the City’s Arbor Day/Earth Day celebration on April 25 on the grounds of the Triton Museum in Santa Clara, California. The children received packets of information that encouraged families to spend time outdoors watching birds in their neighborhoods. The literature explained how to log onto  www.celebrateurbanbirds.org and record their observations. Each child also received a pattern and instructions for making a bird puppet.

Children and teens helped Library staff get ready for the event by making bird puppets to decorate the booth.

Posters at the exhibit displayed pictures of the 15 western urban bird species that are identified on the “Celebrate Urban Birds” website. Library staff and teachers helped the children look at the pictures and place a mark on a sheet of paper for each bird that they had seen. When the sheets were tabulated after the event, rock pigeons proved to be the species that had been seen by the most children. American crows were in second place.

A popular attraction at the booth was a real bird’s nest that had been found on the Library grounds and saved to show the children at the Arbor Day event.
