Helen MacMahon's class
Helen MacMahon's class learned about and drew pigeons, too! The kids at Brooklyn New School sure know a lot about pigeons!

Amalia has done an interesting drawing with both pigeons and people. She has noticed that Rock Pigeons are comfortable around people and live right in our cities...often curious about us and what we might have for them to eat.

Amanda has drawn a pigeon family, I think. Rock Pigeons are almost always very good parents, both mother and father take turns keeping their baby warm and feeding the baby.

Andrew has made a beautiful drawing that shows how long the wings of the Rock Pigeon have to be to support its weight. People used to eat pigeons...they are a fairly heavy bird, with big breast muscles, so they need long wings to keep themselves aloft.

Annie Nael has drawn a pigeon with a face! Pigeons do have some of the same things we have on our faces...eyes, beak is a mouth...what about nose?! Most birds can't smell but pigeons can and it may help them find their way back home if they fly far away.

AtTedy has made a beautiful drawing...noticing the special feet of the pigeon!

Avril has drawn 2 wonderful birds with wings stretched up and open...don't wings make a wonderful shape?!

Charlie can see so many colors in the pigeon, which shows careful observation, because the iridescent feathers that reflect light and look a little shiny do appear to be all different colors, yellow, blue, green, purple, amazing!

Elie has drawn a nice pigeon in black and white, with very nice feet with pigeon toes.

Frances has drawn a pigeon sitting on a nest with eggs! Pigeons will nest over and over again during the year if they are getting enough food and are healthy. Some other birds will only get one chance to make a nest and have babies.

Isabella has drawn a pigeon against a blue and purple sky...interesting that she has noticed that the pigeon's grey body may blend in well against the color of the sky...harder for a predator to see a pigeon and eat it if it blends in with the sky when it is flying!

Gaby noticed that the front and back of a pigeon are different, (head and tail) and that the pigeon has a big body.

Jazee has drawn 2 pigeons in a nest together. Mother and father pigeon may spend some happy time making a nest together..giving each other sticks to make the nest and making it comfortable. Once the eggs are laid they take turns...the dad will come sit on the egg to give the mom a break and let her fly and look for food and water.

Layla has a lot going on in this picture...Pigeons often hang out together in a group and they do have busy lives...always looking for food, always trying to stay safe. If one senses danger usually they will all fly up together...they have empathy for each other and can easily sense what the others in the group are feeling. This helps keep everybody safe.

Lucia has drawn a tree, I think, where a pigeon might hide. A pigeon might look for seeds that fall from the tree and land on the ground.

Maya noticed that the body of the pigeon is a little bit pear-shaped and colorful!

No Name...made a tremendous drawing of a pigeon who looks like a dinosaur, and actually birds are living dinosaurs and have been on earth for millions of years.

Tiger has made a beautiful drawing. This pigeon is either flying in the sky with clouds or perhaps is on the ground near some rocks.
