During courtship, the male Northern Cardinal will sometimes feed the female. I believe this is to show that he is a suitable mate since the male is also involved in the feeding of the baby birds. The photo is a difficult capture since this ritual happens rarely, and takes only a split second. It took many weeks of patience to get this shot.
