Great Blue Heron fishing on Melbourne Beach, FL. Appreciating the sunrise from Melbourne Beach one morning this summer, we looked over to see a fisherman setting up poles. Shortly thereafter, another set of eyes looked over to see the poles set up... those were the peering yellow eyes of a hungry Great Blue Heron. He gracefully sauntered up the beach past us to investigate, silently inquiring of the fisherman what was "running" (what fish were biting). From our position, it looked as if the heron had set the poles up himself. As the fisherman continued to set up his area, the heron generously offered to watch the poles for any nibbles, presumably in the hopes of obtaining a small payment of fish or bait for his assistance.
