2. Catherine Schuelke, TX

This is a song-poem that I composed for my third son.  As an infant, the easiest way to soothe him was to take him outside.  None of my boys were easy sleepers, and I spent a lot of time sitting on the front porch rocking the third one to sleep.  However, the blackbirds that would land in the yard always seemed to catch his eye and stir him, no matter how I was holding him.  We used ASL with our kids and "bird" was one of his first signs.

Blackbird Baby

Now it's time to take a rest
Close our eyes to feel our best
Blackbirds fly into the sky
Always catch my little eye

Now it's time to take a rest
Close our eyes to feel our best
Blackbirds landing in the yard
Make my resting oh so hard
