Funky Nest Entries 41-50

The Carolina Wren's nest below necessitated leaving the garage door partly open 24/7.... Careful scrutiny shows that the wrens paid scant attention to "Keeping children away from plastic bags......."

42. Sarah Benson, Stanwood, Michigan
This nest was on the light over the door on the front porch.

The attached shows a robin's nest on top of a bird box in which there was a wren's nest - "Honey I have rented out the attic !" I was never able to get a photograph of both birds at the same time but both nested successfully.

A few years ago, I noticed lots of birds nesting in the letters of store signs around Ithaca. Letters with curved loops seemed to be the favorites.

A pair of House Sparrows decided that e's were a good place to build a nest at our small shopping center. Just a short distance away another pair of sparrows built a nest in the "e" of Bakery. Farther along another pair chose the "e" in Rite Aid.

I filmed this while 2 birds were trying to build a nest on a umbrella box that has been on our porch for a while waiting to be assembled . The poor birds are really trying but some of the nesting material keeps falling down behind the box . They have been working at it for quite a while . they don't give up easily lol .http://www.gather.com/viewVideo.action?id=11821949021882157
47. Sara Miller Catterall, Ithaca, New York
This one was on our garage shelf at light switch level two feet from the car
(The nest is still there). Not so unusual for robins to nest in a garage, but why did they build asidecar?

48. Nancy Hoffman, Redondo Beach, California
Submitted because it is the cutest thing I've seen! Baby owls sitting in a prickly nest! Mother and children have no fear. . . . Saw this right beside the road as we drove by in Scottsdale, Arizona.
49. Sandra Jones, Perth, Ontario
This is nest in a bar-b-que belongs to a European Starling. It is taken on May 3, 2009 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I am entering it in the contest because I do feel it's a pretty funky and potentially dangerous place to build a nest. The bar-b-que belongs to my sister, a bird lover herself, so rather than disturb the birds, she went out and bought a new bar-b-que.

she's sitting on eggs again! I'm submitting this photo to show how resourceful our feathered friends can be!
