Our space is a very busy place! After mass habitat removal for subdivision development, local birds have flocked to our school's Naturescape. The students have observed a variety of species visiting our several different types of feeders. They fill the feeders and provide ground feed with Black Sunflower, Niger, Wild bird and Songbird seed mix, suet, and fruit. The Naturescape sustains our birds with Northwest native plant species as well. 2nd graders have designed a special experiment to determine to which color our hummingbirds are most attracted. This generates great inerest and discussion. 'Eeny Meeny", a male Anna's Hummingbird, rules over all with his domineering presence. Stop by and visit when you are in Keizer, Oregon!

My little green place is what we call 'out back'. It is an old lodge pole pine tree at the back of our rural property. I have hung several bird feeders from this old pine which is surrounded by 25-30 smaller pines. It is out in the fresh air under the big sky of Montana. There are many birds who sit in the surrounding trees and take turns at the bird feeders and bird bath. There are lots of chickadees, juncos, pine siskins, Stellar's Jays and an occasional woodpecker. There is a pair of red-breasted nuthatches who come every time I go out to sit there. The Pine Siskins nest in the old pine every year. I keep a chair out there to sit in and a stump for my cup of coffee to sit on. It is so enjoyable and relaxing to be out there among the birds and listen to their songs.

This is my grape arbor in the backyard, as drawn by my 10-year old granddaughter, Ashley. She often helps me to keep the birdfeeder filled. We have been keeping this feeder filled for over 35 years now, and we get hundreds of birds a day. They love to hide in the other trees and shrubs all around the grape arbor.

The birds come and drink the water in the fish pond and eat the bugs that come to the water also. It has also attracted frogs. I have installed a few bird houses on the fence and know that at least two are being used. This pond is located in my backyard.

I was inspired by a bird sanctuary that respected and cherished the beauty and life of each bird species.

The attached pictures were taken by me in my back yard. I have tried to
landscape to attract a number of different types of wildlife. I have
enjoyedsitting either in the gazebo or sitting by pond and watching the birds either come to my feeders or go to the flowers planted in the yard. Birds
enjoy either bathing in the provided bird bath on hot days or taking a bath
in the pond. Bird houses in my yard provide a home for many who want to
take up housekeeping. My favorite bird I have enjoyed watching is a Red
headed woodpecker who visited all summer long. Hummers like to go to our
flowers and we enjoyed seeing a Ruby-throated Hummingbird not too long ago.
