Your Questions about Nests
Funky Nests
Watching nests is a wonderful way to connect with nature! There is nothing more exciting than finding a nest and watching its progress over time. Please watch nests carefully so that you don't disturb the birds.
Here are some recommendations:
1. Don't mark the area where the nest is so that you can find it easily again. You'll be attracting other predators to the site.
2. Do not place food near the nest to help the parents. You'll definitely be attracting predators to the nest!
3. Try to disturb the nest as little as possible. If you really need to part the foliage or move something to better view what is happening, make sure you use a stick (not your hands) to do so. Rustle the foliage gently to give the adults a chance to leave before you view the nest. Don't spend long at the nest.
4. Don't try to help! Birds really do know what they are doing...or they need to figure it out by themselves.
5. Don't try to 'rescue' recent fledglings. The parents are nearby watching and feeding them. Keep your cats and dogs away from the young for a few days...and they'll be on their way.
Tampering with nests:
It is illegal to possess or sell bird parts, feathers, eggs and nests of ANY bird native to or migrating within North America.
