Feeding Robins Raisins, Jerry Lindak
I thought that these pictures of American Robins feeding on
raisins follows your theme on Urban Birds perfectly. I have been
feeding Robins for the past 3 winters. It started with robins feeding
on the berries of our Washington Hawthorn. As I noticed the berries being
depleted I began taking berries and placing them on a small plastic
table incorporating raisins with them. It was natural for the robins to
consume the berries and try the raisins at the same time so when the
berries ran out I continued to feed the raisins and have as many as
20 robins feeding 3 or 4 times daily.
The Hawthorn is gone due to Hurricane Ike winds, but the raisins
still work. I believe birds from previous winters have returned for
these life-sustaining fruits.
This is an amazing experience, as these birds watch
for me and fly down to greet me... almost landing on me when I go out to
feed them!
