Killdeer in Church Parking Lot
Evelyn Cunningham of Woodlake, CA shared this story of Killdeer nest in her church parking lot.
We have a Killdeer nest in our church parking lot. I noticed that the eggs started out white with black spots.
A few days before they hatched the white started changing gradually to a light tan color. I was amazed at how well they blend in to the gravel. We had to hunt for the nest before every church service so we could protect it from the cars.
I'm also wondering if you know that they move the nest the first few days. When we found the nest it had one egg. The next day it was moved and had two eggs. The day after that it was moved and had three eggs. The next day it was in the same place but had four eggs. The following day is when she started sitting on them.

The babies hatched yesterday, June 2. I have pictures of the eggs, the parents and the newly hatched babies.
When I went to check on them this morning both parents got involved in defending the nest and one of the babies ran away from it.
Only our people knew about the nest because we were worried about people coming to see. The nest and eggs blended in so well that you could be on top of it and wouldn't see it. You'll notice a piece of wood near the nest. We put it there to make the nest easier to find. Even with babies in it, if they're still there, its hard to find. I was amazed at how fast that baby ran this morning.
