Louisa County Conservation Board
Our Feathered Friends
This year's Louisa County Conservation Board's Halloween Hike will feature Our Feathered Friends and will be held on Saturday, October 17 at Virginia Grove Recreation Area with hikes starting around 6:30 pm.
Prepare to be entertained by a variety of local birds who'll be talking about what they love to find in a feeder, things you can do to attract them to your yard and ways you can enjoy the beautiful and inquisitive birds in your area. The skits will be educational as well as entertaining for the whole family.
For over 15 years the Halloween Hike has taken place along a wooded trail at Virginia Grove Recreation Area after night fall. Participants travel the trail in large, designated groups, following a trail of lighted jack-o-lantern (carved by 5th graders across the county). At lantern lit areas along the trail the groups come across actors dressed in elaborate costumes.
For our Celebrate Urban Bird Event the actors will perform short, educational yet funny skits on a variety of bird related topics such as: the best food for a bird feeder, what to plant to attract birds to your backyard, how water in winter helps birds, how to enjoy birds year round and much more. The groups will see 5 – 7 skits as they walk the trail. Afterwards, they enjoy hot cider or cocoa and cookies at the park’s shelter house. Also at the shelter house will be handouts and publications with more information about creating bird habitat and gardening for birds.
Reservations for the hike are required and can be made online at www.NaturallyLouisaCounty.com or by calling Louisa County Conservation at 319-523-8381. A minimum of one adult for every three children attending is requested. Refreshments and information on attracting birds to your yard wil
l be available after the hikes.
The Halloween Hike is sponsored by Louisa County Conservation with assistance from many community volunteers. Virginia Grove is located about eight miles west of Wapello, Iowa. For more information and a map to Virginia Grove, visit www.NaturallyLouisaCounty.com.
