Getting Started

Everything you need to begin participating!

Here is how YOU can Celebrate Urban Birds!

1. Get your Kit

Start your Celebration with a copy of our Celebrate Urban Birds kit containing a beautiful color poster, information on urban greening, and bird identification for 16 common species.

2. Collect and send data to the Lab

It's easy! Anyone can do it, no matter how little experience you have with birds. Help scientists better understand the value of urban green areas for birds.

3. Participate in greening efforts and help birdsSunflower

  • Plant native plants that provide seeds or berries for the birds. Don't forget to let them go to seed! Even if you live in an apartment you can plant sunflowers provided in your kit in pots! Check out Audubon's Backyard Column.
  • Provide layers of plants for birds. Tall, medium, and short plants are essential! Provide vines for even better habitat.
  • Variety is important. Birds need variety--it is essential especially for native birds.
  • Learn how you can attract birds to your corner of the city.
  • Keep cats indoors.
  • Windows are deadly to birds. Learn what you can do about this common problem.
