WI Water Action Volunteers Stream Monitoring Program Coordinator, University of Wisconsin-Extension and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

Kris Stepenuck

Since 2001, Kris Stepenuck has coordinated Wisconsin’s statewide volunteer stream monitoring program, called Water Action Volunteers. This program, in which volunteers monitor nearly 400 stream sites across the state, is co-sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Extension and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Kris also works with partners at the University of Rhode Island Cooperative Extension and Salish Kootenai College (MT) to facilitate the Extension Volunteer Monitoring Network, a nationwide network of Extension-connected volunteer water monitoring programs working together to share resources to help improve and develop these programs most efficiently and effectively. She earned a B.S. in water resources management from the University of New Hampshire, and an M.S. in natural resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She is currently a PhD dissertator in the Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on improving credibility and identifying impacts of volunteer water monitoring programs across the nation. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors, and especially enjoys kayaking, skiing, and playing ultimate frisbee.
