Sylvia James

Program Officer with the National Science Foundation's Informal Science Education Program

Sylvia M. James is a program officer with the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Informal Science Education (ISE) Program where she focuses on Youth and Community Programs. She is also the Lead Program Officer for the Information Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers Program (ITEST) and previously served as the Lead Program Officer for its predecessor, the After School Centers for Exploration and New Discovery (ASCEND) Program. She also serves as a Program Officer for the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) and Academies for Young Scientists (AYS) programs. Prior to coming to NSF, Sylvia served as the
Director of Education for the National Aquarium in Baltimore where she was employed for 14 years. While at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Sylvia was responsible overseeing a staff that provided programs for the school groups, members, and the general public. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Loyola College and a Master's Degree in Science from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a doctoral candidate in Science Education at Morgan State University.
