Jennifer Shirk

Project Leader for the Citizen Science Toolkit Project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Jennifer Shirk is thrilled to be working as the Project Leader for the Citizen Science Toolkit Project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (CLO). Also a PhD student in Cornell’s Department of Natural Resources, she is working closely with the CLO team to study the endeavor of citizen science. Although she has been involved in citizen science projects at all levels, as a volunteer, educator, and scientist, she has most recently been working to understand the perspectives of scientists involved in such partnerships. Previously she coordinated professional training opportunities for

teachers at the Smithsonian’s Conservation & Research Center, building on earlier herpetology work in Shenandoah National Park to design and implement a high school partnership program monitoring salamander populations. Currently she is also serving as co-facilitator of the Citizen Science Working Group for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s Mega-Transect initiative (she completed a southbound thru-hike of the AT in 2005). She holds a B.A. from Bard College and an M.S. from Cornell University.

Citizen science, volunteer monitoring, participatory action research... this site supports organizers of all initiatives where public participants are involved in scientific research.
