Christy Pattengill-Semmens

Christy Pattengill-Semmens, Ph.D. is the Director of Science for the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF). Christy conducted her dissertation research on fish assemblages at the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico before joining REEF's staff in 1998. She is located in the West Coast REEF Office in Seattle and coordinates REEF's West Coast survey activities and special projects. Christy has overseen REEF's expansion through the years, moving the project from its roots in the tropical western Atlantic to all coastal areas in North and Central America, Hawaii, and most recently the South Pacific. She has worked with partners in all of REEF's project regions. Her main day-to-day responsibilities at REEF are to coordinate with research and management communities on the use of REEF's Volunteer Fish Survey Project data, produce the monthly enews communications, manage the REEF.org website, and coordinate REEF's data management team. In addition to providing raw data files to interested parties, she also writes summary reports for all of REEF's contracted monitoring projects and analyzes datasets to present at scientific meetings. Christy has published several articles in journals such as Bulletin of Marine Science, Marine Ecology Progress Series and Environmental Biology of Fishes. Christy has led dozens of citizen science field projects and has taught fish ID to hundreds of volunteers.
