Data policy resources for citizen science

UPDATE 23 OCT 2013: Clear and concise resources, developed with the support of DataONE, help the citizen science community understand details of data policies.

Hi all,

Whether you know it yet or not, you likely need a data policy.

Admittedly, policies can seem puzzling. But policies offer important protections to both projects and their volunteers. Anne Bowser, former DataONE intern, has tackled the data policy puzzle head-on to help "empower projects to develop strong, appropriate data policies."

Anne, along with members of the DataONE PPSR Working Group, has developed a 13-page Primer to help the citizen science community decipher some of the puzzling aspects of user agreements, terms of use, legal policies, and privacy policies.

Complementing the Primer is a new Data Policy section of the Toolkit, which includes tools, resources, and cases illustrating projects that have developed effective policies.

Have questions, or want to share a policy context you're grappling with? Participate in an upcoming discussion on "Policies and Citizen Science,"  November 11th-15th. Your hosts for the discussion will include:

Anne Bowser
Author of the DataONE Policy guide & former 2013 DataONE summer intern
PhD candidate, School of Library and Information Science, University of Maryland
Graduate Research Assistant, Commons Lab, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars

Lea Shanley
Director, Commons Lab
Science and Technology Innovation Program
Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars

These resources can help make policies less puzzling - check them out, and bring your questions to the discussion in November.
