Professional Development, Citizen Science and Informal Science Education

[Summer 2012] The Association of Science-Technology Centers offers three free workshops for ISE professionals.

Along with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) will be offering a series of free regional workshops on citizen science in science centers this summer [2012; click here for archived resources].

Citizen science can be a powerful way to connect local observations and experiences to real-world research, and can increase participants’ knowledge of their surroundings and of the scientific process.

Our goal is to create a space for informal science education professionals to learn about citizen science methodologies and opportunities, to share their own work in this area, and to network with other science centers, as well as scientists and representatives from citizen science programs. These workshops are appropriate for those who are currently doing citizen science and wish to learn more and connect with other practitioners, as well as those who are interested in learning how to create a citizen science program in their institution (although the workshop will focus on adapting existing programs for use in science centers and museums, it would still be a valuable learning and networking experience for those looking to create programs from scratch).

Through hands-on project participation, brainstorming sessions, and workshop activities, this all-day workshop will focus on setting project goals and activities, identifying and connecting with audiences, negotiating mutually beneficial relationships with partners, and evaluating learning outcomes. We’ll showcase successful projects, and also discuss what can be learned from challenges.

Workshop dates are:

Saturday, May 19 - San Francisco, California
Saturday, June 16 - Denver, Colorado
Saturday, July 14 - Queens, New York

Meals will be provided on the day of the workshop, and some funds are available for travel support. Space is limited. Email Kate Crawford ( if someone from your institution is interested in attending.
