The Mourning Dove By Stephanie
The Mourning Dove seems such a sad bird because of its call, but once you study about it, it's not. It's blue eyes and brown wings with black spots make it a unique bird. It's medium-sized and is a fast flier. It can fly for hours until it sees food. The females make their nests loose on trees, bushes or ground. They lay two white eggs and wait two weeks. The males are brighter and have a brighter nape (the side of the neck). They also have a sad cooing call. That's how they got their name.During the late fall and beginning winter they fly in flocks of hundreds in the south. They are most often seen near farmland, gardens, open woodland areas, and in parks. the things they like best to eat are weed seeds, insects, white proso millet, yellow wood sorrel, and foxtail grass. It is usually five to twenty-five feet about the ground. The most Mourning Doves I have seen at once are twelve. |
