A Pine Siskin's Life

Hi! I'm a certain kind of bird called a Pine Siskin. I'm part of the finch family. They're my closest relatives. I live high in a horizontal limb far away from the tree's trunk, so my predators won't ruin my nest or eat me. My nest is made of twigs, feathers, grasses, weeds, rootlets, and fur.

I like lots of bird food, but I'm mostly attracted to pine and alder seeds. I also eat other tree seeds, and insects. I hang upside down while foraging and eating. My size is 4 1/2 to 5 inches. I love to sing. My song includes a long swee, a harsh buzzing, and a tit-ti-titi while flying.

I'm a pretty bird. My colors are gray and brown. Even though they're pale colors, the way they mix really makes me stand out. I lay 4 or 5 pale greenish blue eggs marked with brown spots. When I migrate I don't stay in one place each year. So if you're outside by a feeder you might just be lucky and see me.
