The Story of a Young Bird By Erin and Emma
It was sunset and I had been flying almost all day in search of food. My wings were tired and my head drooped by my rumbling stomach pushed me on. Living through Maine winters is hard. But, being a Black-capped Chickadee I'm used to it being hard to find food and shelter. Just when I thought that I could fly no longer, I saw a girl filling a feeder full of food. I landed on a nearby branch to wait and watch. Finally the young girl quietly made her way into the house and shut the door behind her. I swept down and ate hungrily from the feeder. Out of the corner of my eye I saw her smiling face watching me through the window. I ate and ate at that feeder for two weeks straight. My stomach had never felt so good in my life. Then one cold day in late December when I came back to the feeder to eat my fill, the feeder was empty. I had become dependent on that source of food and now it was gone. I didn't know what to do. I rushed to the window to where the girl usually sat and watched me eat, but she was nowhere in sight. Maybe if I wait a while she will come out and feed me, I thought. So, that's just what I did. I waited and waited and waited for my friend to come out, but she didn't. Finally I decided to go in search of more food because I was starting to get very hungry. I flew and flew a very long ways and I never went back to see the little girl again.
