Bird Identification Survey

By Bryan, Chris, Matt, Matt, Danny, and Chris

Grade 5

For our Classroom Birdscope article, we surveyed people in our school to see if they could identify different species of birds. We selected nine birds that come to our feeders often. We decided to survey three different groups.

First, we surveyed teachers in the school that did not participate in Classroom FeederWatch. The more common birds of our area, the Blue Jay and Northern Cardinal, were properly identified by all of the teachers. We gave them an A+ for identifying those species, but not one teacher could identify the Purple Finch!

Then we surveyed students in CFW and not in CFW. All of the students in the CFW program identified the House Sparrow, but none of the students that were not in CFW got it right. Almost everyone in both groups recognized the Northern Cardinal. Also, most students in both groups got the Blue Jay right. Half of our team identified the Tufted Titmouse, but nobody got that bird correct outside of CFW.

In conclusion, we think that CFW is a great project for students. We learned about birds that live in New Jersey that we didn’t even know about! More people should birdwatch. It will teach them about the different species of birds.
