An attempt was made to sample differently appearing birds, especially in November and December. No individual should be represented twice, at least not on the same day

AUGUST - The birds have just come off the breeding colonies and are still in pretty good plumage.

SEPTEMBER - Wing molt is apparent and the heads are getting spotted.

This individual had interestingly mottled eyes, with asymmetrical, but similar dark blotches in its irises.

The eyes on this bird were not quite as dark as this shadowed image indicates, but they were not bright, either. In life they did appear dark at first glance.

Note the nearly white underwing. The under wingtips were noticeably pale when it landed. The dark portions are lighter than the mantle. Such individuals are not uncommon in central New York.
