Adaptations: Beaks

Best Beak in Boonaroo Bay by Henry Cole

Description:

In this book, the birds of Boonaroo Bay make a discovery during
their contest for the "best bird beak."

Best Beak
Activities:
  • Discuss how bird bills are adapted for eating, then do this Bird Beak Buffet activity.
  • Watch and sketch birds at a feeder, focusing on their various bills. Discuss which bills might work best for each type of feeder foods (sunflower seeds, thistle seed, suet, hummingbird nectar, etc.). Finish by conducting a Project FeederWatch count of the birds at the feeder.
  • Look at a diverse array of birds online (or print them out) from around the world. Have kids choose one or more to draw and label with what that bird eats. Start with the birds found in the book (Royal Spoonbill, Darter (Anhinga), Double-crested Cormorant, Long-billed Curlew, American Oyster-catcher, Brown Pelican). More general suggestions include: woodpeckers, sparrows, finches, shorebirds, penguins, herons, raptors, ducks, warblers, owls, swallows, wrens.
