Programs for Educators at the Lab of Ornithology

CLO hosts several programs here at the Lab for local teachers and/or students:

Kids Discover the Trail


All 5th grade classes in the Ithaca City School District are invited to participate in this program coordinated by Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI). Last year, 16 classes 5th grade classes participated, pairing up with classrooms from nearby feeder schools. The program includes a two-part pre-visit activity exploring the importance of habitat for birds. Next, the students come here to the Lab for a 3 1?2 hour field trip including a habitat walk through the sanctuary followed by an interactive learning game and a nest-building activity. Each team of students include those from both partner schools, with a series of activities designed to both build students' understanding of the biology content and their sense of community with students from the other school. This is a crucial year for the KDT program, since all the students will be entering the new environment of middle school the following year...


Teacher Professional Development Day


The Lab hosts a series of workshops in conjunction with Cornell University's Teacher Professional Development Day each March, allowing teacher to spend all or part of the day here at the Lab's facilities. Past workshop titles have included:
