Multimedia Resources for Learning about Science Careers
As presented at NSTA National Meeting, March 20, 2009
Featured Resources
Radio Expeditions
Coming later in 2009, the original raw interviews and recordings
from the National Public Radio-National Geographic series will be
available through the Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology.
Please check back for those, and in the meantime, visit the NPR
archives and see ideas on how to use Radio Expeditions in the
classroom at the National Geographic
site.

STEM Stories
This NSF-funded project for Grades 4 - 8 highlights STEM careers and
introduces strong role models through personal stories of diverse
scientists, particularly women. Features a searchable collection
of multimedia resources and brief biographies, plus an in-depth look at
the lives and work of scientists and engineers through audio
interviews, personal photos, video clips, and animations. Site opening
to the public in June 2009. NSTA preview.

Other resources from the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology
Meet the Scientists
From the Lab of Ornithology’s inquiry-based middle school curriculum
BirdSleuth, use Meet the Scientist readings, assignments, and
accompanying videos to help explore scientists' research in their own
words. Use to help students identify or reinforce parts of the
scientific process. Please see section called "Inquiry
Resources."

Crossing Boundaries
This NSF-sponsored teacher professional development experience
explores how scientists and resource managers use geographic
information systems and other technology skills in biodiversity
conservation. Eventually, the web resources will include multimedia
profiles showing conservation careers in action. For now, please
see Fencing
Flamingos, by Jamie Herring, a video profile of Marita Davidson's
work in the Andes.

Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears
The Researcher Stories are intended for K-5 Teacher Professional
Development and always worth checking out. Even better, a February 2009
article and
podcast featured Cornell Lab sound recordists on expedition in the
Canadian Arctic!
