Home Study Course Online Exam Preview

On this page you will find assorted screen shots of some of the eCornell online exams for the Home Study Course. By browsing this page, you can get an idea of what the various pages and exams look like.

When you have registered as a student with eCornell, you will then be taken to your home page within "My eCornell" in order to begin the exam-taking process. The first screen will look something like this:

When you click on "Go to course" underneath the course title, the next page you will see is the Main Index page for the course, and it looks like this:

If you click on the link for Module 01, it takes you to this page:

By clicking on the Chapter 01 Exams link, you will reach the next page in the sequence, which looks like this:

You would then need to click on the part of the exam that you would like to take. In this example, we are clicking on Part I (Multiple Choice). The next screen will appear, and you will get a message box that pops up in the center to inform you that you can only submit this assessment (Part I) ONE time. The message box looks like this - you must click OK to continue (which causes the box to disappear):

After clicking OK in the box, the page in the background will offer some preliminary instructions on how to proceed. When you are ready, you will click on the arrow next to the word "Begin":

Once you have clicked the arrow to begin, you are now taking the exam. The first question will come up, and you will read through the text and select an answer from the choices on the right-hand side of the screen. When you have chosen one, you would click the arrow in the bottom-right corner to go to the next question. This procedure is followed until you have answered all the questions for Part I:

Once you have completed answering all the questions for Part I, another pop-up box will appear. If you are ready to submit your answers for grading, you would click "SUBMIT" - if you are NOT ready, you could go back and change answers at this point, but once you click "SUBMIT," your score would then be automatically tabulated and recorded, and your grade will become final for Part I:

Once you have submitted your score, you will get a message telling you that your score was successfully recorded. At this time, you may click on the "SUMMARY" button to view a summary of your responses:

The summary page will open in a new window, and it looks something like this:

When you are finished viewing the summary (if you choose to do so), you may return to your "My eCornell" page. If the part that you completed was automatically graded, it will be reflected on your "My eCornell" page. If you have passed, the box will be checked and the assignment is labeled as completed:

You will notice that your progress has also been updated on the Main Index page:

You may then complete other exam sections. Some sections of exams (such as Exam 07, Part V, shown here) are not automatically graded. What you would do in that case is fill in your answers, and then click the "Save and View Answers" button. Doing so will not submit your answers for grading or give you an immediate score, it will merely bring up another screen (see next example):

This is an example showing the page that will appear once you have pressed the "Save and View Answers" button for a section of the exam which is not auto-graded. At this point, you have three choices. You can "Enter or Edit Answers," "Create Email," or "Print." If you choose "Enter or Edit Answers," it will take you back to the previous page. If you choose "Create Email," it will open up an Email message addressed to the HSC Staff (see next example), and all you would need to do at that point is copy and paste your answers into the body of the email message (making sure that everything copied over correctly) and then send the message on its way. Or, if you choose to "Print," then you can print a copy of your answers for your records. (NOTE: The "Print" button does not work with some browsers. You may also choose to print the page via whatever means you are used to using to print a web site page):

This is an example of how your email message would look - and where to paste your copied text. Once you have placed the text, you would send the email message to the HSC staff for grading. The answers are graded in the order they are submitted, and the turnaround time will vary, depending on the volume of students completing the course at that time. Your grade will be recorded and an email message sent to you (to notify you of your score) as soon as possible:

You would continue the exam-taking process until you have completed all ten exams. When you are finished, an email message will be sent to you to confirm your status, and your final average will be included. If you maintain an average of 65% or better on all ten exams, you will receive a Certificate of Completion, signed by the Executive Director of the Lab of Ornithology.
