Bluebird Box
06/04/06 09:54
Should you clean out box after each clutch?
What are we looking at?
05/24/06 12:55
This box image looks different that before. Aside from there not being any bluebirds in it, What happened? Is it another box on the property?
Back to the Bluebirds!

Unfortunately, they're in more shade than the ducks, so it's still darker than the duck box was.

Ducklings fledged
05/14/06 09:49
From about 8:37 to 8:42 all the ducklings fledged. As soon as they clear the area around the box my husband will count how many eggs are left. That will give us a head count on the fledglings. (I'm at work watching on line.)

Will the ducklings leave the box tonight?
History of this duck box nest
05/13/06 19:07
On 4/3/06 the first egg was laid in this box. 4/6 there were 6 eggs. 4/9, 12 eggs. On 4/15 there were 20 eggs, which was the final number. The first time the adult female was in there when I checked the box, was on 4/18. I suspected she started incubating around 4/13 so my husband was watching it closely this morning to get it online if they started hatching. Read the species account for information on egg dumping, a behavior documented in Wood Ducks. It explains why we had more than one egg laid per day. I've found that, if a female starts incubating a clutch, even one with 25 or 26 eggs, a large portion of the eggs hatch.

Box dimensions

There was a question about the box size. I basically use the construction plan on this website. http://www.birds.cornell.edu/birdhouse/pdf/boxwodu.pdf Of course, it's extra tall so the camera can be mounted above the door. It's got a door to check the nest and a door to adjust the camera. It's also got a plexiglas roof, spray painted white to let in light.

How do the baby ducklings get out?
05/13/06 15:48
Just out of idle curiosity and it's got me really confused, but how ARE the baby ducklings going to get out of that box? I see the mesh ladder for lack of a better term on the inside of the box that I'm assuming goes up to the hole, but as ducks are webfooted, it would seem impossible to me that they could climb that.
This is a Wood Duck but other ducks use cavities
05/13/06 14:09
We've had Hooded Mergansers in boxes at the Heard Museum(Prothonotary cam host). I know that Black-bellied Whistling ducks will use a box and I think there are other duck species who are cavity nesters also. At the Heard we've actually had Woodies and Hooded Mergansers egg dumpo in each others nests.

Changed roof-better?
05/09/06 19:06
I just went and chnged the roof with a more lightly spray painted plexiglas. Is that better? Sorry it took me so long to get around to it.

PS. I think the Prothonotaries have a nestling hatched!

I currently have a camera inside one of my boxes with an active bluebird nest. The nestlings are 10 days old and very loud! This refreshing page is cool but doesnt come close to watching them live. Would it be possible to view this nest live like the barn owls?
bluebird?
04/18/06 10:47
There appears to be some grass in the box. Could this be the start of a bluebird nest?
