Cam Highlights:

April 19 - The nuthatches are finished
with the box this year, but a pair of Eastern bluebirds have moved in
and immediately began forming a new nest cup! |
|
April 16 - White-breasted nuthatches
usually attempt only one brood per season. The nest box is vacant
once again, but we probably won’t see this pair hatch any more eggs
this year. |
|
April 14 - They've fledged! The
fledglings began exploring up the sides of the nest box today after
noon, and were all gone by about 4 PM. Click here to watch some great movies of the fledging! |
|
The young will remain with their parents in this territory for several weeks before dispersing and searching for their own. |

April 12 - It's clear that these
chicks are just about ready to leave the nest. They're restless,
and they spend much more of their time jostling each other around in
the box lately. |

April 11 - At 19 days old, the
young are able to fledge at any time. Some studies have reported that
young can remain in the nest for up to 26 days! |

April 10 - Just as they are prone to do outside the box, the nuthatch is seen climbing upside down along the inside of the box. |
|
April 9 - Here's one of the parents
feeding the chicks. In the last week before fledging, male
Nuthatches have been known to make over 7 food trips per hour, and
females over 14! |

April 7 - A neat shot of one of the adults removing a fecal sac from the nest. |

April 7 - This nest attempt originally had a clutch of 7 eggs. Six of the eggs hatched, but then a cold spell came through that may have caused the death of two of the hatchlings. |

April 6 - Unfortunately, we were unable to get this camera online any sooner and the four young are already 14 days old in this image. They will be ready to fledge in about a week. Here we see one of the parents in the box with them. |
